TAPA and NALA
TAPA
is an affiliate of the National Association of Legal Assistants (NALA), which has a present national membership representing all 50 states.  NALA provides continuing education, professional development and certification programs for the career field.

TAPA chose to affiliate with NALA recognizing that NALA's goals and purposes were sound and representative of its own aspirations.  Among these goals are:
  • The promotion of the profession of paralegals, education of the public for the advancement and improvement of the profession, and broadening public understanding of the paralegal concept;
  • Cooperation with local, state and national bar associations in setting standards for paralegals;
  • The establishment of a national, voluntary certification program; and
  • Informing its members through continuing legal education.

TAPA MEMBERSHIP

 Active/Associate Membership is open to those employed as paralegals, legal assistants, paralegal educators and attorneys.  Associate members may not vote or hold an office in TAPA but may participate in any committee.

Student Membership is opened to students currently enrolled in a paralegal program. Student members may not vote or hold an office in TAPA but may participate in any committee.

Sustaining Membership is available to non-paralegals that perform services, provide products, or are in some other way related to the legal profession.  Sustaining members may not vote or hold an office in TAPA.

Under the auspices of NALA, TAPA members are required to adhere to NALA's Code of Ethics and Professional Responsibilities.  NALA strives to align its values with those of the American Bar Association and hold disciplinary authority over members breaching these regulations.

CLA/CP Designations

NALA has developed a certification program for those paralegals wishing to demonstrate their standard of competence.  The Certified Legal Assistant/Certified Paralegal examination extensively covers Communications, Ethis, Legal Research and Writing, Judgment and Analytical Ability, as well as substantive law with four specific types of law of the participant's choosing.  This is to certify that the successful participant possesses a well-rounded, comprehensive understanding of the legal system, legal procedures and substantive law.

This exam used to be offered over a two-day testing period, but it has recently gone to a computer-based exam that allows the participant to schedule each section individually during a month-long testing window.

TAPA has developed a study program to be utilized in preparation for this CLA/CP Examination.  TAPA's CLA/CP Study Group is a benefit of membership to our association.  For more assistance, please contact the CLA/CP Study Group Chair.
